Jeff's Story
Jeff is the founder of Bush Hill Coffee, a microroastery based in North Carolina.
For nearly thirty years, coffee was part of Jeff's daily rhythm — there in the morning, on the road, between songs, between seasons of life. He loved drinking it, exploring it, chasing that next memorable cup. But in 2019, something changed. Coffee stopped being just something he consumed. It became something he could create.
That was the year Jeff fell in love with roasting. Like a lot of roasters, he started small — home roasting led to sharing coffee with family and friends, and curiosity became craft, then obsession. Every batch had a lesson in it, and every roast carried the possibility of becoming something expressive, something personal, something that could connect with people the same way music always had for him.
Finding a New Instrument
Jeff is a former musician, and music shaped the way he sees the world — how he listens, how he feels, how he builds emotion into something people can experience. But hearing loss and arthritis in his fingers changed his relationship with playing, and that part of his life became harder to hold onto.
By 2022, Jeff's passion for roasting led him to the Aillio community and the Bullet R1 V2. From the beginning, it felt different — not just a machine, but an instrument. A new one.
Bush Hill Coffee: "When life gives you lemons, make coffee."
Bush Hill Coffee grew from that idea: a passion project where coffee and music could come together, not as a gimmick but as a language. Jeff envisioned coffee releases inspired by the music that moved him, each with its own identity, visual world, and emotional connection to a song, album, artist, or era.
The first release was Drink Floyd. Sixty-two releases later, the project keeps growing — now dropping new coffees almost monthly, drawing on everything from rock to today's alternative, grunge, metal, and even pop. Some releases are loud and bold, some dark and emotional, some playful, some deeply personal.
Every offering has to stand on its own in the cup. Jeff roasts everything from Geshas to decafs, naturals to experimental processes, bright fruit-driven coffees to comforting chocolate-forward profiles — always aiming to honor the producer, the process, and the character of the coffee itself.

He also creates all the artwork for the releases, giving each coffee a world to live in and helping tell its story before the bag is even opened. For Jeff, the release is the whole experience: the coffee, the music, the artwork, the name, the feeling, and ultimately the cup.
The Bullet as Creative Partner
The Aillio Bullet has been central to the journey — the design, the control, the quality, and the community around it giving Jeff room to chase precision while still roasting on instinct. So far, he has logged more than 2,600 roasts and over 460 hours on the machine: a lot of time listening, adjusting, and learning, and proof that the relationship between roaster and machine matters. It's where ideas become aroma, and inspiration becomes something people can actually taste.
The Aillio Community Booth
In 2025, Jeff met the Aillio team at the SCA Expo in Houston. That meeting grew into a collaborative relationship, and eventually into the Aillio Community Booth, where Jeff now serves as a Community Host.
The idea is simple: bring Aillio users and curious coffee people together at events, let them sample-roast on the Bullet, taste coffees roasted on Aillio, and share in real conversation and community. So far the booth has traveled to New Orleans, New York, and Chicago, with Los Angeles and Dallas–Fort Worth still ahead this year. At each stop, it becomes more than a display — people come to see the roaster, but they stay for the connection.
Same Song
Coffee has always been about more than what's in the cup — the producers who grow it, the roasters who develop it, the baristas who serve it, and the conversations that happen around it. Bush Hill Coffee gives Jeff a way to build that connection through his own releases, art, and story. The Aillio Community Booth lets him build it on a larger stage, alongside others who love roasting just as much.
